Gold Smuggling Costs Malawi Over K1.2 Trillion Annually

A new study revealed Malawi loses US$700 million (K1.2 trillion) every year due to illegal gold smuggling. With 81 illegal mining sites identified, most gold is sold secretly to foreign traders. Experts warn this loss is more than double Malawi’s tobacco revenue, undermining foreign reserves and development projects.
